This medium to large sized bronze disc brooch is produced after Norwegian archaeological finds from the Viking age, around the 11th century CE. The brooch has characteristics of the so-called Urnes-style.
These disc brooches, or fibulas, have a needle on the backside to attach the brooch to a garment and were traditionally used to close the necklines of clothing or fasten cloaks, but also for decoration, mostly by women.
The Viking disc brooch – Urnes style has a diameter of 4.5 cm. It is available in bronze, as well as a silver-plated version.
