Oval fibula – Finland

This oval shaped, sand casted brass brooch is a replica from a historical sample from Finland and is perfect for 9th – 11th century Viking costumes. Brooches with this typical shape were found on different locations, besides Finland these brooches were also found in modern day Sweden, Germany, and Russia.

These penannular brooches, also called fibulas, were used to close garments or fasten all sorts of material, but mostly fabric. Medium sized brooches, like this one, were mostly used to close cloaks, for example on the shoulder. The ends of the brooch have a distinguished polyhedron design to make sure the needle stays in place.
