This partly twisted, large iron brooch is a replica from the Viking period.
This is a ‘penannular’ – ‘pen’ for the pin, ‘annular’ simply means ring-shaped – style brooch, also called fibula, with curled ends. These brooches were used widely between the eight and eleventh century but were already in use during the Roman period. The main use is to close garments, such as cloaks.
The Forged fibula – large has a diameter of 7 cm and the length of the needle is 8.5 cm.
